January's Team of the Month operated a New Year's holiday rest stop and were too busy to get cold. Most of the members of Longview Area REACT were Red Cross trained in Shelter Management, First Aid and CPR. The Team deserved the recognition after bouncing back from internal dissension to well earned community respect. Grady Stevens resigned as Chairman of the Board in a letter dated January 28, 1982.
In Amarillo at the March 2, 1982 Council meeting, the Board recommended: 1) that a policy be approved to establish meeting places for the Council one year in advance, and 2) that Sgt. at Arms Mike Lucky be removed from office for non-attendance and an election of his successor be held. Both were approved at the general meeting which was attended by 82 REACTors, the largest attendance at any State Council Meeting. Guest Speaker was Herman Kelly of the Texas Department of Highways and Public Transportation. Paul Howe was appointed to serve as Sgt. at Arms for the meeting and was later elected to the position. Houston Metro Emergency REACT took home the new State Council Travel Trophy with four of the eight Area IV Teams as attendees. Guadalupe County REACT won the Area V Travel Trophy.
Team of the Month for February, 1982 was Lake Palestine REACT for sponsoring a new Team, Henderson County REACT in Athens; four rest stops each year and community involvement in festivals, jamborees, parades and a talent contest. Cooke County REACT was VERY involved with Red Cross Disaster Services during flooding in their area. When a tornado killed ten people in Paris, REACTors from Fannin County and Dallas County were involved in search and rescue as well as communications assistance.
Vol. 4, Letter 3 of BREAK-9 featured an article about new REACTors Larry and Sandy Shreiner of Guadalupe County REACT who took a CPR course with the Team in April and used it 17 days later to save their son's life. Ten year old Craig was taking practice shots at a basketball hoop in front of the garage, someway he ran into a bicycle lock chain that was hanging in the garage and knocked himself out and it left him hanging by the neck and turning blue. While his parents got him breathing, his fourteen year old brother called for an ambulance. He was revived twice on the way to the hospital, but after a four-day stay away from home, he was "good as new!"
The planned bus to the International Convention in Las Vegas didn't materialize, but several Texas REACTors did go: Jerry and Barbara Jennison, Chuck and Judy Thompson, Curtis Bell, unsuccessful candidate for the International Board of Directors Ed Pessink, F. D. and Doris Lindblad and Richard and Keren Pratz.
A robbery at the Tanner home made it necessary for Jim to cancel his arrangements to attend even though he had already paid his registration fee. San Antonio REACTors made sure he quickly got a C.B. set-up to use. The Ch 9 4 to 8 a.m. shift would be hard to fill! The continuous slide show of Texas REACT activities at the Texas Booth attracted some attention, but was outshone by some more professionally orchestrated displays. Reports from attendees were featured at the August 7, 1982 meeting of the Council in the Nolan County Coliseum in Sweetwater which was attended by 64 REACTors. Jim Tanner, as BREAK-9 editor, began to gather Team of the Month nominations to send to the committee for consideration.
The Texas State REACT Provisional Team wound up with four members, one each from Brookston, Brownsville, Anderson and Port Arthur. Houston had a new Team, HOU C.A.P. REACT #4533.
Other 1982 Teams of the Month were:
Council President Pratz received an invitation from the Governor's office to attend the Crimestoppers meeting in Austin on Sept. 28, 1982. He did attend that meeting and also represented REACT on the State Crimestoppers Committee at a meeting in Fort Worth on November 23rd.
The State Council met in Lake Jackson on November 6, 1982 where the featured speaker was Donna McElligott of the Traffic Safety Div., Texas Dept. of Highways & Pub. Transportation. She demonstrated Child Restraint Seats and presented a film describing their use. Flora Walker and five others gave a presentation and demonstration of Life Flight from Hermann Hospital in Houston. Area IV and the Holiday Inn were especially hospitable.
All State Council officers were returned to their same positions except that Rebecca Beran became the new Secretary after Doris Lindblad chose to devote her Saturdays to their new business in Texarkana.

MORE TO DO IN '82
